NEWARK – A toddler who was hit in the head by a stray ball when gunfire was fired on a street is said to be recovering from injuries, authorities said.

Filming in Newark took place on Monday around 2 p.m. on 14th Avenue and South 6th Street. Witnesses reported hearing multiple shots, and the shooters soon fled the area in a car.

Authorities called the incident a targeted shootout but said the 2-year-old girl was not the intended victim. No further injuries were reported in the shootings.

Family members said the child was taken to hospital for emergency surgery. She is expected to recover, but her name and other details about her injuries have not been disclosed.

A motive for the shooting is still being investigated. No arrests were made.
