NEWARK, NJ – Parents and guardians of Newark Public Schools students who wish to enroll their child in a summer program can now do so with several options available.

“The summer months are crucial for your child’s success in school. We want your child to enjoy their summer and we will have incredible learning and fun activities so they can learn with us, ”said Roger León, Superintendent of Newark Public Schools, in a written statement. “These summer experiences promise exciting learning activities that enrich and strengthen your child’s education and continue their path to success for the next school year and beyond.”

The summer program offered by Newark Public Schools offers a variety of activities for students from pre-K through high school.

Parents / legal guardians who would like to register their child are asked to do so online here by May 14th. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s teacher.

Here are some of the summer programs that will be available to students.

K-Ready Kindergarten Bootcamp

The K-Ready Kindergarten Bootcamp is a full-day academic and enriching program for students entering kindergarten in fall 2021.

Students receive targeted tuition that focuses on the following areas: language proficiency; Mathematics; Science; Approaches to learning; social-emotional, health development; and will explore a variety of topics through teacher-designed enrichment projects in a playful learning environment.

The program runs from July 1st to August 6th.

Opening times: 8.30 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Summer plus

Summer Plus combines academic and enriching activities into an all-day summer program and is open to students in grades K through 7.

Summer Plus was developed by the Newark Board of Education’s curriculum experts to improve critical math and reading skills and ensure students are well prepared for the start of school in September.

The morning core academic lessons are taught by NBOE teachers and supported by NBOE staff. The afternoon enrichment sessions are conducted by NBOE teachers and community-based organizations.

Together, the NBOE staff and community partners offer thematic, project-based learning that is linked to the classroom material in the morning. Summer Plus sites offer an Extended Day option for a limited number of registered families daily from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Pupils in grades K to 7 are assigned to the summer locations depending on the sending school.

High school summer courses

The High School Summer Courses program offers students a variety of options including taking credit recovery courses and expedited courses.

The Credit Recovery courses offer students who need to catch up on a course to graduate. Students must visit every five weeks from July 1st to August 6th.

The Accelerated Courses program offers students the opportunity to earn credits in Geometry, Algebra, Spanish, French, and US History II. To receive credit for a class, students must attend every five weeks from July through August 6th.

The High School English Plus course is an enriching program for English learners to develop their English skills for high school level teaching. It specifically supports newly arriving students and students who have passed ESL but are looking for additional assistance.

The program is open to students in grades 9 to 12.
