NUTLEY, NJ – The ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic and economic upheaval have all taught us two very important things: Innovation is more important now than ever and, for those in trouble, a vital element of further development.

This week, Khris Reina and his team at Oakley Kitchen and Cocktails heard the call to help others and served 250 hot meals to customers at St. John’s Soup Kitchen in Newark.

St. John’s has been in the same location for years, serving hundreds of customers every week. The economic consequences of the coronavirus pandemic put a further strain on the operation of the soup kitchen. This is where innovation comes in.

St. John’s management works with FeedNJ to coordinate the delivery of meals from numerous restaurants in New Jersey. The effort not only nourishes those faced with food insecurity, it keeps restaurants busy during these uncertain times. The Oakley delivered a hot lunch on Tuesday, April 27th.

Reina told us, “Business is better than it was when the pandemic started, but we’ve lost a lot of time to make up for that. It’s great to be able to serve some of our staples like our meat and vegetable bowls in soup kitchens. Our chef is phenomenal and we are are excited to be working on our summer menu that we plan to serve at future FeedNJ events in Eva’s Village in Paterson, St. John’s, Newark, and other soup kitchens. “

Dan Knitzer of SoupKitchen441 told TAPinto that they expect to partner with The Oakley Kitchen + Cocktails again this spring and into the summer.
