(NEWARK, NJ) – Newark work kitchens (NWK), a Covid-19 response that is enabling Newark’s restaurants to deliver nutritious meals to seniors and low-income families, has announced that it will deliver over 10,000 Thanksgiving meals to Newark residents November 23-26. Each of the 24 Newark-based restaurants in NWK have their own Thanksgiving-inspired menu and will deliver thousands of meals to residents in senior, low-income, and disabled-accessible homes.

As the Newark community continues to face the limitations and challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, NWK wants to ensure that the community members most in need are provided with a hot meal for the vacation.

Additional holiday meals were made possible thanks to a special donation from Audible’s Black Employee Network (BEN). Audible launched Newark Working Kitchens in April as a continuation of its longstanding support for local restaurants.

“The decision was easy, there is a sense of urgency in today’s world, especially when it comes to food insecurity. Hunger doesn’t wait, ”said Yvonne Durant, Co-Head of the Audible Black Employee Network (BEN).

“I celebrate and thank these amazing restaurants that have delivered more than 600,000 meals and will continue to cook Thanksgiving for their neediest neighbors,” said Don Katz, founder and chairman of Audible. “Newark Working Kitchens continues to be seen as a win-win for community members who don’t have enough groceries and independent small businesses to stay in business. I call on corporations, philanthropists, and donors of all levels of donation to help us sustain this important program. ”

Since launching in April, NWK has delivered nearly 600,000 meals to more than 10,000 residents in 60 locations. All meals are prepared in the 24 participating NWK restaurants, more than half of which are minority and / or women owned. NWK has saved hundreds of jobs during the pandemic and helped restaurants restart their services and get employees back on board over the past six months.
