It’s officially graduation season. While it may be one of the happiest times in a college graduate’s life, it can also be the scariest. Now is the time to think about the future and plan what comes next. Now is the time to dive head first into the career you have been preparing for over the past few years. Now is the time to step into the real world.
Even though not everyone starts their dream career right out of college, figuring out what you want to do and where you want to be is always good. There are so many factors to consider when finding the right place to start your career, including job market saturation, housing affordability, commuter friendliness, and more.
Unfortunately, according to Wallet Hub, this year’s graduates are not entering the job market at the best time. Just last month, the unemployment rate for people between the ages of 20 and 24 was 10.5% due to the pandemic. There is good news, however! According to Wallet Hub, employers are planning to hire 7.2% more graduates from the 2021 class than from the 2020 class thanks to the introduction of the Covid vaccines.
Wallet Hub compiled a list of the best and worst cities in the country to start careers in in 2021, and Newark, New Jersey came last out of 182 cities. Factors used to determine the rank of each city included metrics such as workforce diversity, quality of life, proportion of workers in poverty, average monthly starting salary, affordability of housing, and more.
It is very telling that Newark is the worst city of any major city in the country. Graduates, you might want to think twice before looking into career opportunities there.
