A new lawsuit alleges that the late Archbishop of Newark cared for and molested a five-year-old girl while serving as Archbishop.
The lawsuit, first reported by NorthJersey.com on May 10, was filed by a woman identified as “Clara Doe”. Doe alleged multiple harassment in 1976 in Archbishop Peter Leo Gerety’s bedroom in the church rectory.
Doe said Gerety became friends with her family shortly after he was appointed Archbishop of Newark in 1974. She said Gerety would bring her family food and babysit them while her mother was at work.
During several of these babysitting sessions, she said, Gerety exposed, masturbated, and sexually molested her.
The lawsuit, filed in the Essex County Superior Court in March, provides for $ 50 million in damages.
“As a child, I mistakenly thought that God specifically sent Archbishop Gerety to my mother and family to save us and help us get food. I felt I had no choice but to follow Archbishop Gerety’s instructions, ”Doe said in a signed affidavit.
A spokesman for the Archdiocese of Newark told CNA on Wednesday: “It would be inappropriate to discuss or comment on any litigation, but it is important to note that the Archdiocese of Newark continues to be fully committed to transparency and our long-term programs protect believers and will.” continue to work with victims, their legal representatives and law enforcement agencies to resolve the allegations and shut down the victims. “
Doe said she told her sister about the alleged abuse eight years later when she was 13.
