An investigation is underway after a man was fatally stabbed to death in Newark on Saturday morning, authorities said.
The stabbing, the fifth reported murder in the city of the week, took place near 100 block of Parker Street, police said.
Police responded to a report of a sting just before 2 a.m. on Saturday, according to a statement from Essex County’s Acting Attorney Theodore Stephens and Newark Public Security Director Brian O’Hara.
When the officers arrived, they found “a man with an obvious knife wound,” police said.
The man was taken to the university hospital and pronounced dead at 2:35 a.m.
The victim’s identity has not been released as the family is still being notified.
The other four murders in Newark that week were all shootings.
Those with information about the stab wounds are asked to call the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Murder / Serious Crime Task Force at 1-877-TIPS-4EC or 1-877-847-7432. Calls are treated confidentially.
