The architectural firm Grimshaw has announced that they will be building a new Terminal One at Newark Airport, which serves New York City.
Grimshaw is serving as the lead design architect for the Newark Liberty International Airport project, which the global company calls “the largest transportation infrastructure construction contract in New Jersey state history.”
Working with leading design firm STV and contractor Tutor Perini / Parsons, the architectural firm designed a two-story T-shaped building that spans a million square feet and includes 33 gates.
“The design is designed to accommodate the airport’s growing capacity while meeting the changing needs of passengers and airlines in the years ahead,” Grimshaw said in a statement.
Terminal 1 is expected to start construction in April 2018 and be completed in 2022. It will replace the airport’s adjacent Terminal A. The aim is to create more passenger equipment as well as a more efficient check-in system and security screening process.
The terminal is also to be modified and expanded in the future in order to take account of the increased demand for airlines and the number of passengers.
New York’s LaGuardia Airport is to be demolished and rebuilt with three different designs
“The most successful contemporary airports today have a clear vision for the future in anticipation of change,” said Grimshaw. “Terminal One will enable EWR to successfully cope with a rapidly changing industry and unprecedented growth.”
Newark Liberty International Airport currently has three terminals – A, B, and C – that were built in the 1970s and 80s at a location on the Passaic River that has served as an air transport hub since the 1920s.
“Newark has a rich architectural history that is dominated by the modular concrete structures of the existing terminals,” said Grimshaw partner Mark Husser.
“In that context, the new Terminal One will be a world-class gateway in creating a bright, modern steel and glass building with open sightlines and natural light, acting as an ambassador for the New Jersey area and New York area for the future. “
The plans for Newark will coincide with upgrades and overhauls of other airports in and around New York City. LaGuardia is currently being phased out and completely replaced by new terminals, and John F. Kennedy Airport is also to be rebuilt by $ 10 billion.

Also at JFK, a terminal designed by Eero Saarinen is being converted into a hotel at JFK.
Founded in 1980 by architect Nicholas Grimshaw, Grimshaw was ranked 95th on the 2017 Dezeen Hot List. The company has worked on several airport projects around the world, including a new terminal in St. Petersburg and an airport with six runways for Istanbul.
