“We expect United Airlines’ daily service from Newark to return from May 6th,” said the Bermuda Tourism Authority [BTA] Interim CEO Glenn Jones said.

In an email to stakeholders, Mr. Jones said, “Bermuda is in the middle of a week with significant changes to its aerial transport image.

  • Last weekend, JetBlue resumed direct flights from Boston three times a week.
  • British Airways moved its London flight from Gatwick to Heathrow yesterday.
  • And Charlotte will be American Airlines’ gateway to Bermuda from the USA five times a week, at least for the time being.

“The above complements the existing flight service for JetBlue from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York and the Delta service from two major airports: JFK in New York and Hartsfield-Jackson International in Atlanta. In May, we expect United Airlines service from Newark to return with daily service starting May 6th.

“All of these steps are in line with what our team here at the Bermuda Tourism Authority shared with our stakeholders. But that does not mean that these developments are without surprises.

“When we exchanged news about the move from London to Heathrow last fall, we thought it would take effect at a time when the world was much more advanced in pandemic recovery. Instead, we have one flight a week from London and UK citizenship that is still banned.

“We hope the London service will increase three times a week in May and five times a week in June. This would be in line with the UK government’s gradual comeback plan. If the timeline is right, it fits perfectly with the busiest time of year for the Bermuda leisure travel industry. That would be a plus, but at this point it’s also wishful thinking.

“The airlines are changing their flight schedules to keep track of the load factors and they will do so with just 30 days notice. This is what makes the Department of Transportation’s homeport cruise plan so interesting.

“Nothing motivates a flight plan as much as demand. And when traveler sentiment surveys indicate it, consumers are ready to drive again. The Royal Caribbean Vision of the Seas cruise from Bermuda to a private island in the Bahamas is likely to increase seat demand for Bermuda routes. Any cruise stateroom sold to someone outside of Bermuda requires a seat on an airliner to board the ship.

“Once these travelers have booked cruise staterooms and occupied airline seats, we hope it will help protect the Bermuda Airlift planned for this summer – Washington, DC, Philadelphia, New York’s LaGuardia, etc. Royal Caribbean needs this cruise passenger seating capacity. Bermuda needs it for hotel and holiday apartments.

“A collection of Bermuda partners are constantly talking to airlines about the demand picture. Fortunately, the image that comes into focus for this summer is attractive for the recreation of tourism on the island. That’s the good news.

“So what’s the bad news? Things change quickly. The latest flight schedules for Bermuda are available on the Skyport website. Part of a tourism company? Register with BTAConnect today. “
