A very good K9 sniffed 88 pounds of illegal sausage at Newark Liberty International Airport, officials said on Monday.
The experienced beagle named Kody was examining luggage arriving from Kosovo on Friday when he alerted his handler to a suspicious suitcase, Customs and Border Protection wrote in a press release.
When staff examined the luggage, they found about 88 pounds of “pork sausage” banned from entering the US from Kosovo, CBP said.
“Importing pork, while seemingly harmless to the general public, could seriously damage our economy and agriculture,” Troy Miller, director of CBP’s New York field operations, wrote in a statement.
The passenger, apparently unaware of the meat mandate, had explained the Franks and told the officials that it was “homemade sausages”, which got him out of a fine or another penalty.
It wasn’t immediately clear what the staff did with the sausages or whether Kody was getting them as a prize.
