Essex County prosecutors have identified a 7-year-old boy who was killed in a house fire in Newark early Thursday morning.

The boy was identified as Sahir Hartfield. Authorities say the fire started at 65 Astor Street around 4:45 a.m. The fire spread to the two neighboring buildings.

The boy’s body was found on the third floor of the house. According to the prosecutor, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities say three other children, ages 1, 5 and 11, escaped along with two adults.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
