A 23-year-old man was pronounced dead by an apparent knife stab at around 2:30 a.m. in the city’s North Ward on the 100th block of Lincoln Avenue, Essex County Assistant Attorney Thomas Fennelly said. The man’s identity was not immediately disclosed.

A second male victim was fatally shot at around 4:25 a.m. in the city’s South Ward on the 100 block of Madison Avenue, Fennelly added. He was pronounced dead at the university hospital and his name and age were not immediately published.

The murders occurred more than four miles apart and are under investigation. No arrests have been made, Fennelly said.

“The murders don’t appear to be related,” Fennelly explained.

Two non-fatal shootings are also being investigated by the police. Only one of the shootings resulted in injuries, said Brian O’Hara, Newark public safety director.

A male victim was shot down at around 11:30 p.m. Friday at Block 100 on South 9th Street in the city’s West Ward, O’Hara said. He was hit in the leg and is in stable condition, police added.

Newark Police were also dispatched to Block 10 of Marie Place in Newark’s South Ward at 12:25 p.m. Saturday to release a possible firearm, O’Hara said. Police said they found ballistic evidence at the scene, but there was no casualty or evidence that any person was shot.

Both incidents are being investigated, O’Hara added.
